Truman Capotes novella Breakfast at Tiffanys is set in New York City in the 1940s and draws the readers attention to a certain kind of female independence that was rather uncommon in the mid-20th century. Holly, an independent girl, lives her life according to what she wants, paying little attention to what other people expect of her. As a young woman who financially sustains herself by spending time with wealthy men Holly faces constant criticism and disapproval of the way she lives. To protect her autonomy she is even willing to break the law and escape to a foreign country.
